In a consistent trend marking another year of insightful research, the Center for Sustainability and Excellence announces the unique findings from its 7th Annual Research on ESG Ratings and Reporting Trends.
The research turned the spotlight on 210 of North America’s most profitable companies across 21 diverse sectors. The criteria were stringent: it focused on the top 10 most profitable FT500 companies in each sector, determined by the annualized profit growth percentage from 2021 to 2022. What emerged was a compelling narrative of success intertwined with sustainability.
Specifically, the annual research has illuminated a noteworthy correlation between financial prowess and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.
Methodology
The results have been based on a strategic blend of quantitative and qualitative analysis. To discern the best practices of the most profitable and sustainable companies, CSE relied on a combination of ESG rating systems (CDP, Sustainalytics, S&P) and frameworks (GRI, SASB, TCFD). The annual research also included an evaluation of Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) goals.
Common Characteristics of Financial Leaders

Setting themselves apart, they extensively utilize specific standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

A striking pattern emerges when evaluating ESG performance. The vast majority of the most profitable companies boast medium to high ESG scores, underlining their commitment to holistic sustainability. Their higher participation in ESG Ratings further distinguishes them within their peer group.

The financially thriving organizations adeptly incorporate stakeholder concerns and preferences into their strategies, as evidenced by meticulous materiality assessments. This two-way communication ensures alignment with the expectations of key stakeholders.

While these companies set ambitious ESG goals, envisioning a future of Net Zero in Carbon and Waste, the reality reveals a nuanced landscape.
