The topic of sustainability has become progressively important in the UAE in the last five years, from Dubai announcing its objective of being one of the most sustainable cities in the world, to sustainability being one of the essential themes of the EXPO 2020 plans.

Having made headlines as one of the least sustainable countries in the world with one of the largest carbon footprints and its inhabitants using almost double the energy as many European nations, Dubai is now looking toward to a more sustainable future.

Because of its rapid development and change in Dubai, sustainability (CSR) is more important than ever. Sustainability (CSR) is important to everyone as it can provide both major opportunities and reduce risk in the short and long term. Key sustainability issues include energy efficiency, compliance with regulatory and corporate social responsibility policies relating to the environment, efficient waste management and disposal , the sourcing and use of water, the food supply chain and air, water and ground emissions.

These challenges demand attention. Our next CSE Certified CSR Practitioner Program (Advanced Edition 2018) will be in Dubai, this November 11 – 12, 2018. Planning and thinking ahead in order to maintain a climate and sustainability strategy is on CSE’s agenda along with Case Studies, Supply Chain, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Communications.

Although the culture of CSR seems to be rapidly growing in the UAE region, industry moguls and multi-national organizations need to catch up with the rest of the world and include CSR and the UN SDG’s in their operations.

During the CSR Forum that took place last week, an in-depth discussion took place of the industry best practices and the impact of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on innovation and investment.

The 17 UN SDG’s are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They also include climate action, economic inequality and innovation, among others.

After it’s sold out events in London, Toronto, NYC and Houston CSE will present in Dubai the Global Advanced Certified CSR Practitioner Program this November 11 – 12, 2018. The UN SDG’s, planning and thinking ahead in order to maintain a climate and sustainability plan is on CSE’s agenda along with Case Studies, Supply Chain, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Communications.

Habiba Al Marashi, President and CEO of Arabia CSR network, said: “We are witnessing a sea change in the culture, mindset and readiness to adopt CSR, and not as a way of looking good.”

The UN SDG’s demand attention, and the adoption of CSR practices in every corporation. Our next CSE Certified CSR Practitioner Program (Advanced Edition 2018) will be in Dubai, this November 11 – 12, 2018. For more information, visit www.cse-net.org or email [email protected].

The British oil giant vowed to set carbon targets for its operations since much of the company’s strategy update focused on clean energy. The carbon targets, including one for methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, will be announced by BP in the next two months.

Discussing further on the shift to green energy, Lamar McKay, the deputy chief executive, said: “Our industry is changing faster than any of us can remember, certainly in my career.”

BP bought a $200m stake in Europe’s biggest solar developer, returning to solar and is reportedly looking into other bigger solar investments.

In the heat of this change environment, CSE will be back to London to present the Advanced Certified Sustainability Practitioner Program this December 06-07, 2018. Planning and thinking ahead in order to maintain a climate and sustainability plan is on CSE’s agenda along with Sustainability, Supply Chain, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Communications.

BP is not the only oil and energy company diversifying its business.

One of the most eye-catching energy innovations of the last year – the deployment of the world’s first floating windfarm – was undertaken not by a renewables developer but by an oil company, Statoil. Meanwhile, France’s Total took a 23% stake in the renewable energy firm Eren. Shell is seen by many industry watchers as the leader in this transition.

Investor pressure, consumer attitudes and governments’ climate change policies are all heading towards this transformation. But increasingly it is the economics of renewables and electric cars that are in the center of this transition.

The next CSE Certified Sustainability (CSR) Practitioner Program (Advanced Edition 2018) will be in London, UK December 06-07, 2018. For more information, visit www.cse-net.org or email [email protected].

2018 Houston training start of partnerships and friendships!

The Centre for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE) is constantly growing its network of certified sustainability practitioners.  Why do we make such an effort?  UN Sustainable Development Goal #17 encourages us to “strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.”  We’re thrilled the UN has codified what we’ve done for over 15 years!

In Houston, we celebrated 10 years of sustainability (ESG) training.  We had participants from North and South America.  Sectors included Food & Beverage, Energy, Utilities, Infrastructure, Facilities Management, Government and Environmental Consulting.  When the city of Plano, Texas, NASA, Sandia and the US Forest Service share ideas, successes, challenges and meals with ExxonMobil, Shell, Aegion, and Vulcan Materials, the conversations are forward reaching.

The training hosted three sustainability consulting professionals and three returning practitioners.  This speaks to the relevancy of the CSE research and the degree to which we stay ahead of trends.  You don’t come to our training to catch-up.  You come to be a leader!

Of the many insightful conversations, the most valuable ranged around the sharing of ideas.  One conversation connected an energy company with biomimicry inspired solar cell coatings.  Another shared favorite authors and pioneers in the field of sustainability.  We mentioned Donella Meadows for systems thinking and Allan Savory for herd management.  And, of course, our own award-winning president and sustainability pioneer, Nikos Avlonas.

What partnerships will emerge?  Which networks will grow?  Too soon to tell.  But, when Jack Link’s beef jerky talks to Treaty Oak whiskey distillery, who knows what sustainable foodie innovations will emerge?

CSE is a leading boutique firm specializing in maximizing social, economic and environmental impact. We help professionals advance their careers through our certified on-site, online and group training services globally.  We support Fortune 500 companies and other organizations grow and excel through our specialized consulting services.  Our next North America Certified Sustainability (CSR) Practitioner Programs, updated for 2019, will be held in Atlanta, USA, Feb. 21-22, 2018, and Toronto, Canada, April 11-12, 2018.

Europe specific findings to be presented next in London

Are European Corporations role models for Sustainability (CSR) reporting? Given the high concentrations of energy, financial and pharmaceutical organizations, many believe Europe veers toward Sustainability (CSR) and the EU Directive on Non-financial and Diversity Information (Directive 2014/95/EU).

Our October 9, 2018, at 10:00 AM BST, live webinar presents a comparative analysis of Sustainability (CSR) and corporate social responsibility reporting by European-based companies and organizations from CSE’s Research on Sustainability (CSR) Reporting Trends in Europe.

While many companies researched are leaders in their field, they are not necessarily leaders in Sustainability (CSR). As the new European Directive is becoming embedded more and more in national legislation, CSE’s latest research program focuses on reporting practices of more than 460 corporations from 8 leading business sectors (financial services, construction, food and beverage, logistics, chemicals, healthcare, telecommunications, energy).

    Important insights include:

    • Common Sustainability Strategic Objectives per sector in selected European Countries
    • Common Social Impact Goals and the practices followed by EU companies on how to measure their social impact
    • The impact of the EU Directive on non-financial reporting

    Other key trends include:

    • Sectors with the highest reporting presence
    • The rapid growth of UN SDG’s adaptation and the range of incorporation
    • The challenges of external assurance and how companies can increase transparency and credibility
    • The new GRI Standards and how they can be used to comply with the legislation for non-financial reporting

The expert webinar will be led by Nikos Avlonas, president and founder of CSE.

After the webinar you will get a copy of the full research!

CSE’s research furthers its commitment to high caliber training in sustainability for corporate executives and Sustainability (CSR) managers worldwide. Its Sustainability Academy (a global initiative to train 100,000 sustainability professionals by 2020!) provides rigorous education to sustainability professionals, entrepreneurs and graduates needing the latest resources to advance in this ever evolving field.

Findings of the new CSE research will be presented for the first time and discussed in further detail in London during CSE’s Global Certified CSR Practitioner Program in December 6-7, 2018.

Corporate Sustainability (CSR) is a growing industry that is taking the world by storm. Although often confused with the idea of environmental science, this definition does not represent the diversity of the field today. The main reason why Sustainability (CSR) is more and more positioned as a central element of corporate strategy is because it can bring value to Marketing, Supplier and HR functions of an organization in a measurable way.

And like with any rapidly rising business field, it requires well trained and updated professionals with the necessary skills to perform a variety of different functions, ranging from engineering to industrial management and including the design and execution of activities related to environmental, economic and social aspects. Research from various sources has shown that since the introduction of the term of sustainable development in the late 1980s, there has been a constant growth to the number of companies with full-time sustainability managers. Especially since 2000 the number of such companies has increased by 400%. This is evident also in the fact that more than 60% of sustainability professionals have been in the field for less than 10 years.

Many Sustainability (CSR) job opportunities are also focused on helping organizations and companies run more efficiently, thereby increasing profits, pleasing their customer base, and creating a sense of comfort and security among the community.

So, are CSR professionals something like a modern superhero? Are Sustainability jobs too difficult to acquire?

Research has shown that there are the 5 steps that will help you ensure you a job in Sustainability (CSR):

    1. Get a globally recognized certification in the field of CSR
    2. Acquire cutting edge knowledge (CSR Reporting, legislation, CSR trends, carbon reduction strategy)
    3. Address key sustainability (CSR) challenges (GRI standards, UN SDG’s) and learn how to improve an organizations financial performance
    4. Access a Global Business Network of sustainability (CSR) leaders
    5. Get the skills to meet Stakeholder expectations in today’s world of increasing demand for transparency

The Centre for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE), after London, Toronto, NYC and Houston, will be back in Dubai to deliver its annual CSR Practitioner Program.

The two-day program builds on from module to module and whether you are starting your CSR career or are excelling in it, you will benefit from attending.

This is the most successful program in the field of CSR since we have certified over 1700 CSR Managers and 90% of the Fortune 500 firms from 50 countries so far. CSE has been approved by CMI (Chartered Management Institute of the United Kingdom), in offering certified trainings for CSR Managers, Communication Directors, HSE Managers and other executives. CSE is also Green America certified business.

We are all aware of the triptych of environmental, financial and social impact and their interlinkage when it comes to Sustainability (CSR).  A society is unable of survival without the support of a healthy natural environment and the role of corporations and organizations is crucial when it comes to keeping the balance and contributing to both the environment and the society.

Most companies take their contribution to society seriously under consideration and embed it in their strategic goals. But how well do they assess and measure their impact? And how can they maximize this impact to the benefit of society?

There is a key role to be played on behalf of companies of any type and size, especially for those companies that set a good working environment on top of their priorities. That is to reassure that human rights and labor relations are protected and staff is well managed, trained and promoted while working conditions are well catered.

Identifying the social impacts is one of the first steps to make which happens to be the easy part compared to the process of measuring them. It is worth noting that there is a highly likelihood to jeopardize the transparency of translating human experience into numbers. Frequently, making only a part of tangible measurements is often questionable as to how complete a company’s operations are and if they are able to go further.  That is to include all stakeholder relationships under a legal umbrella to avoid any corruptive and disappointing social consequences.

Nevertheless, there is a challenging role that companies are called to play in the society in order to adapt and harmonize their presence within it by taking over activities that address the overall good and achieve sustainability. Still, if their social impact is not clearly understood by all departments within a company, the process is unlikely whether it can be put into force. This is why it is essential to integrate a Social Impact Assessment into their corporate strategy.

Sustainability Academy has designed a special online course for professionals in order to provide them  with the most comprehensive and practical knowledge on Social Impact Assessment and SROI. Take the opportunity to receive the affordable online certificate and along with the Online Diploma on Corporate Sustainability, become a Certified Sustainability (CSR) Practitioner.

Action plans need to be taken for the environment in the 21st century. Even though many of MENA’s economic challenges have been analyzed and dealt with, environmental challenges are hardly taken into consideration in the process of forming economic policies in the region. Surely, there are gaps in knowledge about the economics of environment and CSR in the MENA region, and the most current trends regarding MENA’s sustainable resource management.

In the heat of this challenge, CSE will present the Global Advanced Certified CSR Practitioner Program this November 11 – 12, 2018. Planning and thinking ahead in order to maintain a sustainability (CSR) plan is on CSE’s agenda along with Case Studies, Supply Chain, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Communications.

By identifying the complexity of the concept of sustainable development, it is obvious that accounting tools and sufficient training are needed for the 21st century. Yet, while many of these tools already exist, more in-depth analysis and training is needed.

These challenges demand attention. Our next CSE Certified CSR Practitioner Program (Advanced Edition 2018) will be in Dubai, this November 11 – 12, 2018. For more information, visit www.cse-net.org or email [email protected].

Farmers in the UK are looking into how leaving the EU’s legislation would improve sustainable food and farming in the UK, or whether Brexit could only worsen the situation.

Policy officer Sam Packer mentions: “The British government is seeing agriculture as an opportunity to tell a good story about Brexit. And this happy tale, like everything else to do with Brexit, is still up in the air.”

On the side of sustainability, the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales has teamed up with Greener UK to make sure that Brexit works for farming and the environment.

In the fuzz of this environmental and political insecurity, CSE will be back to London to present the Advanced Certified Sustainability Practitioner Program this December 06-07, 2018. Planning and thinking ahead in order to maintain a climate and sustainability plan is on CSE’s agenda along with Sustainability, Supply Chain, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Communications.

A local farmer, Humphrey Lloyd says: “The history of political change is the history of hopeful people doing what they can. We need to hope, we need to work hard and we need to believe.”

These challenges demand everyone’s attention. The UK requires all the expertise it can have through its trained sustainability practitioners. The next CSE Certified Sustainability (CSR) Practitioner Program (Advanced Edition 2018) will be in London, UK December 06-07, 2018.
